WEBFLOW AND FRAMER, COMPARED

Webflow and Framer give a designer the whole canvas.Tome gives the business the part behind the login.

If your site was designed in Webflow or Framer, it probably looks better than most. This page puts them next to Tome: what each one gives you, what a year costs when a professional does the work, what you can take with you if you leave, and the cases where the canvas is the right answer.

THE SHORT ANSWER

A design tool, or a platform.

Choose Tome

If the site needs a login: members, courses that remember progress, a store and a CRM that share one record of a person, and you want to own the code and the database it runs on. Install the packs into a Payload project, or have us build it.

Choose Webflow

If the site is the design: marketing pages and CMS content, a team that publishes without a developer, and hosting you never think about. Premium is $25 a month per site, billed yearly.

Choose Framer

If it's a launch page, a portfolio or a motion-heavy brand site and you want it live this week. Basic is $10 a month per site on yearly billing, with a custom domain included.

BEHIND THE LOGIN

Where the canvas stops.

01

The part behind the login is the platform

Webflow used to have memberships. It retired them this January, "in favor of our ecosystem of vetted app partners," and now points you to Outseta or Memberstack. That's a reasonable decision for a design tool, and it tells you what a design tool is. On Tome the login is where the platform starts: the member, the course she's on, the order she placed and the record the CRM keeps of her are one person in one database. The running version of that is on the Vanguard study.

02

You can take it with you

Webflow's export gives you the HTML, CSS and JavaScript, and its own help page lists what stays behind: CMS content, ecommerce, user accounts, form processing, site search, localized content. Framer's help page says it "does not offer HTML export for self-hosting." A Tome site is Payload and Next.js source in your repository, with your content in your own database. Any shop that knows the stack can run it, with or without us.

WHERE THE CANVAS WINS

Four sites that should stay on Webflow.

The site is the design

The site is the design. Marketing pages and CMS content, a team that designs on the canvas, nobody who wants a code repository. Webflow's interactions editor and CMS at $25 a month are the whole job, and everything Tome adds would go unused.

Publishes without a developer

Your marketing team publishes without a developer, and you already pay for Webflow. Limited seats are $15 a month, and Team comes with staging and publishing workflows.

Live this week

You need it live this week. A Framer site on the $10 plan, with hosting and a custom domain included, launches faster than anything on this page.

Procurement wants a vendor

Procurement wants a vendor. Webflow's Team and Enterprise plans come with an annual contract, a stated uptime figure and single sign-on. No hosting to run and nothing to patch.

If one of those is you, use the canvas. Tome earns its fee at the first login.

WHAT IT COSTS

The software by the year, the work by the job.

The blocks

Free

$0

Marketing Starter and Content Writer, 19 blocks. A free account, no card, no trial.

Craft Library

$250/yr

Every paid pack and theme. Stop whenever you like: what you've installed keeps working; you just stop receiving new releases.

The engines · added per project, on any plan

Learning

$300/yr

Courses, lessons, and progress.

CRM & Marketing

$400/yr

Contacts, pipeline, campaigns, and intake forms.

Commerce

$400/yr

Catalog and checkout, set up with us because it touches payments.

Agency

$4,800/yr

Every engine included, for studios running many client sites.

YEAR ONE, BOTH WAYS

Five subscriptions, or one platform.

Tools only means you do the work. Built and kept means a professional does it and stays on. The cheap professional route on Webflow, a template plus a customization service for about $2,500, has no login behind it, so it isn't on the ledger.

LineYear oneWhat it carries
01Webflow, tools only

About $984 a year, plus 2% of whatever members pay you

Premium at $25 a month, Outseta for logins, payments and a CRM, and Zapier. The 2% is Outseta's; Memberstack starts at 4%. Both sit on top of Stripe's fee.
02Framer, tools only

About $1,044 a year, plus 2%

Framer Pro with the same Outseta and Zapier stack, and the same percentage.
03Webflow, built and kept

Roughly $11,500 to $72,500

A 5- to 10-page build from $3,000 to $20,000, membership wiring $1,500 to $3,500, the tools above, and a retainer of $500 to $4,000 a month. The retainer is most of it.
04Tome Static site + Care

$3,950, and the site is yours outright

$2,750 for the site and $100 a month for Care, which keeps it patched and current.
05Tome MVP platform

$25,000 fixed, plus $300 to $700 a month

The retainer is roughly 15% a year and covers security patches, platform updates and backups.
06Tome full platform

From $55,000

Always scoped first in a $5,000 Architecture Sprint that's credited to the build.
What the fee buys

Tome isn't the cheap option for a marketing site, and this page won't pretend it is. What the yearly fee and the build buy is one platform where the login, the course, the store and the CRM are engines you own, with nothing to export because nothing ever left your hands.

FIVE STEPS

From a Webflow export to a running platform.

  1. STEP 01

    Export what you can.

On a Workspace plan, Webflow exports your HTML, CSS, JavaScript and assets. CMS collections, ecommerce items and user accounts export as CSV. Framer's CMS exports through plugins.

  2. STEP 02

Model the operation, not the site.

The Architecture Sprint is two weeks and $5,000, credited to the build: the data model, the phases, the risks, and an exact price. If you don't build with us, you keep the architecture.

  3. STEP 03

    Build it, or install it.

An MVP is $25,000 fixed; a full platform starts at $55,000. If you have a developer and a Payload project, the packs and engines install with one npm install and a free account, and the get-started guide takes about an hour.

  4. STEP 04

    Bring the design across.

Tome's blocks take your tokens: colour, type and spacing come from one file, so the site keeps looking like the one your designer made. The content imports from the CSVs, and the addresses you've earned rankings on redirect to their new homes.

  5. STEP 05

    Launch, then keep it current.

Care is $100 a month for a site; the platform retainer runs $300 to $700 a month. Security patches, platform updates and backups are ours to do, and the code stays yours.
